Paul-Munroe Engineering Marine and Defense Products now Part of Curtiss-Wright’s EMS Division

CHESWICK, PA – January 1, 2021 – Curtiss-Wright’s EMS division today announced that the Paul-Munroe Engineering line of marine and defense products (previously known as Paul-Munroe Hydraulics or Paul-Munroe Enertech) moved internally from Curtiss-Wright’s Nuclear division to the EMS division.

“We are excited to take on this product line and look forward to supporting the needs of our customers,” said Todd Schurra, Sr. General Manager, Fleet Solutions, EMS division. “Paul-Monroe has a long history of providing technologically superior products to the U.S. Navy and Fleet Solutions is uniquely positioned to continue that legacy.”

Fleet Solutions will provide comprehensive services and spare parts for legacy Paul-Munroe Engineering systems, including Stern Gate Controls, Deck Actuators, Steering Gears, Fluid Transfer Pump Modules, and other shipboard fluid controls. Engineering and manufacturing have already commenced at the Company’s facilities in California, Florida, and Virginia. The Company will also produce advanced Paul-Munroe Engineering modularized pump skids to support modern ship building methods. These fully integrated pump skids and controls for the handling of all fluid types are delivered prefabricated, coated, and tested for rapid installing and commissioning.

DAVIDSON, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that it has been awarded contracts valued in excess of $220 million to provide propulsion valves, pumps and advanced instrumentation and control systems for the U.S. Navy’s Virginia-class nuclear powered attack submarine, Columbia-class submarine and Ford-class aircraft carrier programs. The awards were received from Bechtel Plant Machinery, Inc. (BPMI) and General Dynamics Electric Boat to support ship construction, spare parts and submarine back-fit procurements.

CHESWICK, PA ­­ – March 3, 2020 – Curtiss-Wright today announced that the company is relocating a portion of its Steam & Air Solutions (SAS) business to a new office space located at 2475 Tarantine Boulevard in Wellsville, New York effective March 16.

The new location represents a commitment by Curtiss-Wright to maintain a presence in Wellsville. At its new location, SAS will provide office space for approximately 32 employees in engineering, finance, sourcing and project management.

Curtiss-wright and Frampton Construction Announce the Grand Opening of 144,000sf Facility in Summerville, South Carolina

CHESWICK, P.A. – December 17, 2019 – Curtiss-Wright’s EMS Division today announced that its Steam and Air Solutions (SAS) business unit has officially moved into their new state-of-the-art facility located in the Charleston Trade Center in Summerville, South Carolina.

The new 144,000-square foot building will support the design, manufacture, test, and shipment of Navy steam turbines and steam valves, nuclear steam turbines, aftermarket steam parts, upgrades, and overhauls.

“We are thrilled to be locating our operations in Summerville and look forward to supplying our mission-essential products and services from our new, modern manufacturing, testing, and office facility,” said Greg Hempfling, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the EMS division.

Construction of the facility began in 2018. It includes 109,000 square feet dedicated to manufacturing. The remaining 35,000 square feet houses offices for general management, product engineering, project management, quality, finance, sourcing, and manufacturing technical support. Construction of a steam test plant, which will be used by Curtiss-Wright to test products within the facility, is currently underway and will be operational by summer 2020.

To Supply Ship-Borne Helicopter Recovery Assist, Securing & Traversing (RAST) MK VI

CHESWICK, PA ­­ – July 15, 2019 – Curtiss-Wright’s EMS division today announced that it has received its next award to manufacture two more RAST MK VI Systems for the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Force (JMSDF) in support of their new frigate builds. The division’s INDAL business unit initially received an order for the first two new frigates in May 2018. These ships are expected to be a force of modern, high speed, multi-purpose frigates built in 3 baselines, the first baseline comprising 8 ships and a potential of twenty-two ships in total. The RAST MK VI is a helicopter handling system that fully integrates all of the functions required to safely operate and stow ship-borne helicopters in adverse weather and sea conditions up to sea state 6.

MISSISSAUGA, ONTARIO, CANADA – May 29, 2019 – Curtiss-Wright’s EMS Division today announced that it has received an option award to its existing Seaspan Shipyards (Seaspan) contract for the manufacture of its Aircraft Ship Integrated Securing & Traversing (ASIST) System, and related Track components and Spares, to support the Canadian Joint Support Ship (JSS) program. The multi-million dollar option award covers the supply of equipment for the first ship.

In addition to enabling safe launch and recovery, ASIST facilitates the securing and maneuvering of helicopters, particularly in adverse weather and sea conditions up to sea state 6. CHESWICK, P.A. – May 7, 2019 – Curtiss-Wright’s EMS Division today announced that its Steam and Air Solutions (SAS) business unit will relocate to a new facility in Summerville, South Carolina.

The new state-of-the-art facility will support the design, manufacture, test, and shipment of Navy steam turbines and steam valves, nuclear steam turbines, aftermarket steam parts, upgrades, and overhauls.

“Curtiss-Wright’s EMS Division is moving forward into a new and exciting future”, said Greg Hempfling, Sr. Vice President and General Manager, EMS Division. “This new facility shows our commitment to providing the highest-quality equipment, parts and services to our customers.”

The new facility will be approximately 134,000 square feet, with 100,000 square feet dedicated to manufacturing. The remaining 34,000 square feet will house offices for general management, product engineering, project management, quality, finance, sourcing, and manufacturing technical support.

Curtiss-Wright Provides Update on AP1000 Reactor Coolant Pumps

DAVIDSON, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced the following in response to a media report discussing a potential issue with one of the reactor coolant pumps (RCPs) at the Sanmen 2 AP1000 nuclear reactor in China:

  • Curtiss-Wright has learned that one of the four reactor coolant pumps located at the Sanmen 2 reactor in China unexpectedly tripped and shut down upon the detection of a reactor coolant pump fault.
  • At this time, the root-cause of this situation, presently limited to a single RCP, is unknown and we are in the process of evaluating the cause(s) in conjunction with Westinghouse and China. There are many situations that could possibly cause this type of an issue and the root cause will not be determined until the investigation is complete.
  • Regarding the RCP located at Sanmen 2:
    • The RCP in question was fully assembled and tested, completely air-tight and water-tight, and deemed to be fully operational when it left our Cheswick, PA plant.
    • All of the required testing was successfully completed before it left the U.S.
    • Based on what we know today, CW’s legal liability, if any, is limited to the cost of repairing a part, up to the cost of replacing a part or the entire RCP.
  • After arriving in China, all 16 RCPs passed the required tests, which were signed off by the Chinese customer. The plants were later deemed to have achieved commercial operation.
  • In addition to the four RCPs at Sanmen 2, there are 12 RCPs currently operating in the other AP1000 plants at Sanmen and Haiyang in China.

CHESWICK, P.A. – July 17, 2018 – Curtiss-Wright is collaborating with the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering on a research project as one of two corporate partners. The University of Pittsburgh research project is being funded by a $1 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to improve the design and production of additive manufactured nuclear plant components as part of the DOE Nuclear Energy Enabling Technologies (NEET) program.

Additive manufacturing (AM), or 3D printing, has advanced the manufacture of complex components utilizing metal alloy powders that are applied one microscopic layer at a time and sintered or fused by lasers. Under current manufacturing processes, maintaining a component’s structural integrity requires interior supports which are too difficult and expensive to remove post-machining. This limits the adoption of AM by industries such as nuclear energy, which rely on cost-effective manufacturing of complex components.

To find an effective solution to these complex processes, the University of Pittsburgh’s Swanson School of Engineering will be the lead investigator on the award to advance design and manufacture of nuclear plant components via additive manufacturing.

The novel research will be directed by Albert To, associate professor of mechanical engineering and materials science (MEMS) at the Swanson School. Co-investigators include Wei Xiong, assistant professor of MEMS at Pitt, and Owen Hildreth, assistant professor at the

Arizona State University School for Engineering of Matter, Transport, and Energy. Corporate collaborators in Pittsburgh include Curtiss-Wright Corporation and Kennametal Inc.

The integrated approach taken by the project team will be to develop first-of-its-kind dissolvable supports, greater topology optimization, and improved microstructure design to make state-of-the-art nuclear components at lower cost, with minimal distortion and greater structural integrity.

The award is one of five NEET Crosscutting Technologies projects led by Department of Energy national laboratories, industry and U.S. universities to conduct research to address crosscutting nuclear energy challenges that will help to develop advanced sensors and instrumentation, advanced manufacturing methods, and materials for multiple nuclear reactor plant and fuel applications.
