DAVIDSON, N.C. – Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) and Saipem have reached a significant milestone for the subsea applications industry: the completion of the qualification process of an all-electric seabed barrier fluid-less pump. Developed based on proprietary solutions inherited from the nuclear sector, this unprecedented technology will enable the subsea injection of treated sea water into a reservoir, thus extending the lifecycle of subsea fields.

While the conventional pumping system features a barrier fluid which serves as coolant, lubricant and insulation, the technology developed by Saipem and Curtiss-Wright is based instead on an innovative design whereby the subsea pump is cooled and lubricated by the sea water itself, while the motor is protected by a canned casing suitable for deepwater applications. The absence of the barrier fluid avoids the need for its constant replenishment and the risk of sea water contamination. Furthermore, due to Saipem’s “all-electric” strategy, the technology allows the replacement of conventional hydraulic umbilicals with power/control cables, thus reducing costs. This pump is the first seal-less, barrier fluid-less subsea pump with such high power.

In 2018, Curtiss-Wright and Saipem signed an exclusive collaboration agreement to develop this new technology: a 3 MW full-scale prototype has been manufactured and tested in water through an extensive specific program, which eventually confirmed the expected performance, robustness, and reliability.

This new solution is certified for several Saipem-proprietary subsea treatment technologies, including SPRINGS®, the subsea desulfation technology owned by Saipem, TotalEnergies, and Veolia.

This certification represents a fundamental goal as it validates the achievement of Technology Readiness Level 4 (TRL 4) as witnessed and endorsed by Petrobras and TotalEnergies and it marks the commencement of the relevant commercialization on a global scale.

With this milestone, Saipem confirms its investments in innovative solutions available as industrialized products to extend the life of assets in the subsea sector and to make offshore operations increasingly safe, sustainable and convenient.

CHESWICK, P.A. – Curtiss-Wright Corporation today announced its Engineered Arresting Systems (ESCO) business unit will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for its new facility in Genté, France on May 15th, 2024.

The new facility, which is expected to be completed in 2025 will consolidate ESCO’s workforce from three separate buildings located in Merpins and Cognac France into one new, modern facility. At approximately 54,000 square feet, the facility will centralize functions including manufacturing, engineering, quality, finance, and sourcing.

DAVIDSON, N.C.-- Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced that it has signed a Technology Cooperation Agreement with PETRÓLEO BRASILEIRO S.A. – PETROBRAS (NYSE: PBR) to design, manufacture, test, and provide operational support for a Subsea Canned Motor Boosting System, to be deployed mudline at a Petrobras production field in the Campos Basin, Brazil.

Curtiss-Wright is working jointly with Petrobras to develop a subsea boosting system for unprocessed hydrocarbon fluid consisting of a mixture of oil, gas and particulates that will operate at a 1,500-meter water depth. The system will leverage Curtiss-Wright’s canned motor technology, as well as Petrobras’ expertise in flow assurance and offshore hydrocarbon production and processing, to ensure the subsea boosting system will perform according to field requirements. Further, it is expected to serve as an effective and reliable alternative to current subsea pump technologies by reducing unplanned outages and production interruptions.

This “topside-less” technology will support Petrobras’ objective of all-electric subsea boosting systems to enable long tie-back production arrangements. Additionally, the design provides flexibility to deploy future Curtiss-Wright topside-less subsea boosting systems scalable to 6MW for multiphase applications, in alignment with Petrobras’ technology development roadmap.

Curtiss-Wright is performing the design, manufacturing, and water-based testing at its Cheswick, Pennsylvania facility within the Company’s Naval & Power Segment. Multiphase testing with hydrocarbons will take place at a facility in Brazil. The first Subsea Canned Motor Boosting System is expected to be ready for operation in 2027.

CHESWICK, P.A.­­ – Curtiss-Wright Corporation (NYSE: CW) today announced it has been awarded a contract by Fairbanks Morse Defense (FMD) to supply the United States Coast Guard (USCG) with next-generation actuation on the Polar Security Cutter Program.

Curtiss-Wright will provide FMD with an electro-mechanical actuation solution that features rotary actuators to control critical service valves. Curtiss-Wright’s actuation solution includes rugged, qualified equipment currently supplied for U.S. Navy applications utilizing upgraded, robust communication protocol to provide reliability in the most challenging operating environments of the Arctic. This actuation solution will enable the USCG to reliably operate heavy icebreakers and support Operation Deep Freeze.

CHESWICK, PA ­­ –– Curtiss-Wright’s EMS division today announced that its Engineered Pump Division (EPD) business located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, has completed a 5,000 sq. ft. facility extension to house a new deep test loop specifically designed to test Main Sea Water (MSW) pumps for the U.S. Navy’s Ford-class aircraft carriers Enterprise (CVN 80) and Doris Miller (CVN 81).

The high-ceiling expansion (30’) houses a 20’ x 15’ x 32’ deep test loop, includes a 30-ton dual-hook bridge crane, and a 480-volt soft starter with 500 horsepower needed to meet stringent testing requirements. Over 60’ from the bottom of the test pit to the ceiling, these dimensions were required to simulate shipboard piping and allow for the clearance to install the motor onto the pump while in the test stand. Weighing in at over 23,000 lbs., it is EPD’s largest and heaviest pump. Although dedicated to the MSW test loop, this facility includes space for additional storage and the ability to house temporary test loops for infrequent or rare legacy pumps through our growing aftermarket programs.

CARNEGIE, PA — Today, Congressman Chris Deluzio (PA-17) announced that Curtiss-Wright Corporation’s Electro-Mechanical Division (EMD) facility in Cheswick, PA has been awarded U.S Department of Defense contracts totaling more than $100 million. For these two contracts, EMD will manufacture submarine secondary propulsion units (SPU) and the SPU installation structure, referred to as a rotational deployment mechanism (RDM). These are important engine components used by the United States Navy.  

Curtiss-Wright EMD is a global integrated business that has operated in Cheswick, PA since 1952 and specializes in manufacturing critical application rotating electric equipment, namely motors, pumps, ship propulsion systems, and electrical generators that are integral to powering the U.S. Navy nuclear fleet. More than two hundred of the skilled trade employees at Curtiss-Wright are union workers represented by IBEW Local 1914.

• On September 7, 2023, the Department of the Navy announced that Curtiss-Wright EMD was awarded a not-to-exceed $59,086,116 firm-fixed-price, stand-alone contract for the procurement of 10 secondary propulsion units. This is a stand-alone contract with no options. All work will be performed in Cheswick, Pennsylvania and is expected to be completed by September 2028. Naval Supply Systems Command Weapon Systems Support is the contracting activity. 

• On August 24, 2023, the Department of the Navy announced that Curtiss-Wright EMD was awarded a not-to-exceed $41,119,900 firm-fixed-price, stand-alone contract for the procurement of 13 rotational deployment mechanisms. This is a stand-alone contract with no options. All work will be performed in Cheswick, Pennsylvania and is expected to be completed by January 2031. Naval Supply Systems Command Weapon Systems Support is the contracting activity.

CHESWICK, P.A. – June 19, 2023 – Curtiss-Wright’s EMS division today announced that its Engineered Arresting Systems (ESCO) business unit located in Merpins, France will relocate to a new state-of-the-art facility in Genté, France. The move will allow for more seamless design, production, and qualification of some of the world’s most advanced aircraft arresting systems, including energy absorbers, engagement systems, and mobile systems.

The new facility will be approximately 54,800 square feet, a 11,800 square foot increase from the current building. The move will also consolidate our workforce from three separate buildings located in France into one new facility, allowing manufacture, test, and front office capabilities, including engineering, management, quality, finance, and sourcing, to be under the same roof.
